Cape San Blas Turtle Walk

Gulf County, Florida, is a haven for sea turtle enthusiasts, offering unique opportunities to engage with these magnificent creatures through initiatives like the Turtle Trail and Turtle Walks.

Gulf County Turtle Trail

The Turtle Trail is a family-friendly scavenger hunt that combines art, exploration, and conservation. Scattered throughout Gulf County are six vibrant turtle statues, each representing the area's commitment to protecting sea turtles.

Visitors are encouraged to find these statues, take photos, and share them on social media using the hashtags #InGulf and #TurtleTrail. By participating, you not only enjoy a delightful adventure but also raise awareness about sea turtle conservation. As a token of appreciation, participants can stop by the Gulf County Welcome Center to receive a complimentary stainless steel straw, promoting eco-friendly practices.

Turtle Walks

From May 1st to October 31st, Gulf County's beaches become nesting grounds for Loggerhead sea turtles. The Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center offers guided Turtle Walks, allowing visitors to observe nesting turtles or hatchlings making their way to the Gulf under the moonlight. These walks are led by trained volunteers who provide insights into the turtles' life cycles and the importance of conservation efforts. Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing, bring red-light flashlights, and remain quiet to avoid disturbing the turtles.

Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center

Located in Port St. Joe, the Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center serves as an educational hub for all things related to sea turtles. The center offers interactive exhibits, educational programs, and information on how to participate in conservation efforts. Visitors can learn about the challenges sea turtles face and the measures being taken to protect them.

Protecting the Sea Turtles

To ensure the safety of nesting turtles and hatchlings, beachgoers are encouraged to follow these guidelines:

  • Keep beaches clean: Remove all trash and personal items at the end of the day.

  • Flatten sandcastles and fill holes: Obstacles can hinder turtles' movement.

  • Use red-light flashlights: Bright lights can disorient turtles.

  • Respect marked nesting sites: Avoid disturbing areas designated for turtle nests.

By adhering to these practices, visitors contribute to the preservation of Gulf County's rich marine life.
