St Joe Bay Buffer Preserve

The Buffer Preserve protects the uplands that keep St. Joseph Bay pristine—the pine flatwoods, coastal scrub, marsh, and tidal flats that support the bay’s famous seagrass beds and marine life. It’s managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and includes documented cultural sites, underscoring the area’s long human history.

Where It Is

St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve sits just south of Port St. Joe on Florida’s “Forgotten Coast,” wrapping the eastern shoreline of St. Joseph Bay. The Visitor Center is at 3915 SR 30A, Port St. Joe, FL 32456. It’s open weekdays 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and features an observation tower, maps, and exhibits.

Things to Do at the St. Joe Bay Buffer Preserve

Hike, Bike, or Ride Horseback

Miles of sandy woods roads and multi-use trails crisscross the preserve. Popular routes in the Deal Tract include Old Pine Bay Trail and other spurs with views of the bay—great for wildlife spotting and coastal scenery. Leashed dogs are welcome.

Birding & Wildlife

Watch for bald eagles, wading birds, and seasonal migrants along marsh edges and open flats. The Deal Tract is a designated stop on the Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trail and is open sunrise to sunset.

Paddling the Bay

Clear, shallow waters and expansive seagrass make St. Joseph Bay a paddler’s dream. Launch nearby on Cape San Blas or other public launches to kayak or paddleboard over grass flats where you may see rays, sea turtles, and dolphins. (The Buffer Preserve protects the uplands; the adjacent St. Joseph Bay Aquatic Preserve protects the water.)

Fishing & (in-season) Scalloping

Anglers target redfish, trout, and flounder in the bay’s grass beds. Recreational bay scalloping is a beloved seasonal activity here—check current FWC seasons and regulations before you go.

Learn at the Visitor Center

Drop in for trail maps, habitat exhibits, and bay-view photo ops from the observation tower—an easy first stop before you hit the trails.
